GPA Election Alert!

This fall several elective seats on our GPA Board will be up for re-election, including AICP Director at Large, Treasurer, Vice President for Programs, Vice President for Chapter Services and three District Directors. These vacancies on the GPA Board provide a great opportunity for additional members to take on leadership positions within our organization. We particularly need to increase the diversity of our leadership.

All nominees must be a member in good standing of APA and be at least 18 years of age. If you are interested in serving or would like to suggest candidates, contact Dan Reuter, GPA President. In addition to being selected by the committee, nominees may be made by submitting a written petition with the name of the nominee, the position to be filled, and the signatures of ten or more GPA members to the Nominations and Elections Committee on or before July 21, 2007.

A Joint Study Committee on Transportation Funding co-chaired by Senator Jeff Mullis and Representative Vance Smith has been implemented. The initial meeting of the Committee was today. To follow the activities of the Committee and provide input, see www.gatransfunding.com.

Per the website:

"The Committee recognizes that transportation is a critical resource in the State of Georgia in providing a high quality of life for residents across the state, and that transportation is essential to commerce and the provision of goods and services to the people of this state, to getting the citizens of Georgia to the workplace, medical facilities, and educational facilities, to the tourism industry, and to every facet of the lives of Georgia citizens.

Since finding the necessary funds to maintain and improve our transportation systems and infrastructure is becoming increasingly difficult, new sources and methods of funding transportation projects are needed to allow the transportation systems in Georgia to keep up with the needs of the population.

Therefore, the Joint Study Committee on Transportation will study these issues to determine alternative funding mechanisms for transportation projects and special funding sources."

District 6 – Downtown Baseball Stadium Being Studied
submitted by Paul DeCamp, AICP, District 6 Director

Mayor Deke Copenhaver and the Ripken Baseball Group have appointed a committee to explore the feasibility of building a baseball stadium in downtown Augusta. Since being formed in April, the 26-member Downtown Stadium Exploratory Committee - comprised of public and private sector representatives – has met three times, made a site visit to West End Field in Greenville, SC and formed three subcommittees to examine planning, financing, site analysis and impact issues. The committee also will visit stadiums in Greensboro and Durham, NC in late July.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to explore the possibility of locating a new stadium in our City Center.”, stated Mayor Copenhaver. “With our downtown revitalization efforts beginning to take off, we feel as though this project has the potential to be both a public gathering space which will serve local citizens for generations and an economic engine to spur future growth in our urban core.”

The committee is also coordinating the hiring of a consultant to complete a feasibility study on the proposed stadium. An RFP was issued on July 2nd and proposals are due by July 16th. The feasibility study is expected to take 90 days to complete. The primary site being eyed for the new ballpark is state-owned riverfront property adjacent to the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame Botanical Gardens. A public-private partnership will likely finance the $20 million, 6,000-seat facility.

The Ripken Group owns the Augusta GreenJackets, a Class A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. The team currently plays at Lake Olmstead Stadium; a 12-year-old, 4,300-seat ballpark located about 3 miles from downtown. A new baseball stadium is viewed by many in the community as a catalyst for continued revitalization of downtown Augusta.
